Han Society
The Chinese society was very structured under the Han Dynasty. The Chinese believed that the emperor had divine authority so they accepted the control. They believed that when the emperor did his job right, China would have peace. If he did his job wrong, China would suffer with earthquakes, floods, and famines. Only just rulers had divine approval which was know as the Mandate of Heaven.
Confucianism
Some government positions were filled by testing the applicant's knowledge of Confucianism. Confucianism is the teachings of Confucius. It taught that gentlemen should practice generosity, respect, diligence, honesty, and kindness. Confucianism set the qualities that government officials should have.

- Artisans and merchants
- Soldiers - guarded the empire's frontiers
- Slaves - usually were conquered people
